Recreation

Get active in Perth's Eastern Region with golf, racing, kayaking and cruising, rock climbing and water parks and pools. For a slower pace your shopping and cinema options are all catered for too.

Golf

Perth's Eastern Region offers seven golf courses to choose from. All courses require bookings, so make sure you call ahead.

In the Swan River precinct, take a swing on the 9-hole Embleton Golf Course, or the 18-hole Maylands Peninsula Golf Course - with picturesque views of Perth city across the Swan River. Set on the site of the old Perth Airport, each of the holes is named after an Australian aviation pioneer.

Visitors to the Swan Valley can take on two challenging 18-hole golf courses at the previous home of the Johnnie Walker Classic, or stroll the greens in South Guildford.

For the less serious golfers, the Swan Valley is also home to a giant sized golf course, with oversized clubs and balls. On the opposite end of the scale, mini golf is available in the Swan Valley too.

Racing

Ascot Racecourse, the premier horse racing venue in Perth, is the place to be on race day. Keep an eye out and your hat ready for exciting events during the seasonal racing carnivals.

For those that prefer to get behind the wheel themselves, the Swan River also offers go-kart racing fun in Belmont.

Climbing and abseiling

Adventure seekers looking for places to try abseiling or rock climbing can choose from two popular locations in the Perth Hills. Boya Quarry is located near Mountain Quarry in the Boya/Darlington area and heritage-listed Stratham's Quarry is located in Gooseberry Hill. All activities in these areas require an authorized leader, and consent of the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC).

Water sports

A day out on the Swan River is an experience no visitor should miss. Tour companies offer Swan River cruises, which can be booked via the Swan Valley Visitor Centre.

If you prefer your own pace, you can access the river from; Claughton Reserve, Riverside Gardens or Bardon Park in Bayswater, Cracknell Park, Hardey Park and Garvey Park in Belmont, or Pickering Park and Point Reserve in Bassendean.

Beginners to paddlesports like kayaking can enroll in beginner's classes at local paddlesport clubs for a great way to safely learn the Swan River.

Water parks and pools

Water parks and pools are a great way to exercise and have fun as a family.

Bayswater Waves, WA's only wave pool, has six heated pools, a twisted waterslide, a lazy river, raging whirlpool and even swim in movie nights (search the events calendar).

Belmont Oasis, located opposite Faulkner Park in Cloverdale, offers fitness facilities for all skill levels, from the Olympic size lane pool to the lagoon pool for the family.

Kalamunda Water Park in the Perth Hills is open from October to March and boasts fun for all ages with an Olympic size lane pool, two tube rides, children's pools and a toddlers play area.

Maylands Waterland is a water-based playground on the Maylands peninsula overlooking the Swan River. With four pools, winding river, play equipment and mini golf course for the kids; and picnic, kiosk, and barbeque facilities for the parents, its great water fun for young families.

Shopping

The favourite past time for many visitors, Perth's Eastern Region offers a range of shopping choices. Belmont Forum, Midland Gate and Centro Galleria in Morley are all large shopping centres with a range of specialty and major retailers.

Visitors seeking an alternative shopping experience can explore the James Street antique strip in Guildford.

Monthly markets are a great place to find that special something, or pick up some fresh local produce.

Guildford Heritage Markets are held once a month on the third Sunday in the historical Guildford Town Hall built in 1938. Spoil yourself with a fresh-made cup cake or a sausage sizzle. The markets are open from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm and entry is free.

Kalamunda Farmers Market is a farmer and produce market held every Sunday from 8.00 am to 12.00 pm at the Central Mall in Kalamunda. Come along and talk to the producers about their special family recipes, taste the samples on offer, and meet others with a passion for fresh and local produce. Bring along your own shopping bags as plastic bags are not permitted at the market.

Kalamunda Village Markets are held on the first Saturday of every month from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm along Barber Street, Kalamunda, with local art, craft, plants and other hidden gems.

Mundaring Sunday Markets are held by the Mundaring Rotary Club on Nichol Street in Mundaring and feature a great variety of stalls. Markets are open 9.00 am to 3.00 pm on the second Sunday of every month.

Old Perth Road Markets are held on the last Sunday of each month (except in December) on Old Perth Road, on the corner of Guildford Road in Bassendean, from 9.00 am to 2.30 pm. Discover the produce and crafts from the local area.

Market dates and locations can change for special occasions. To find out when the local markets are on, check out the events calendar.

Cinema

The Swan River and Swan Valley have movie cinemas for all your blockbuster needs, but for a more unique experience enjoy a starlit movie at the Mundaring outdoor cinemas during summer in the Perth Hills.
